A modern arena, a historic club

Estadio
Mestalla is a football stadium in Valencia and has got a capacity of 55.000. It
is the home of Valencia CF and has also been host for 3 games during the FIFA World
Cup back in 1982. Mestalla is known for its good atmosphere and its steep terracing, which makes it a very high and imposing stadium.
It was built back in 1923, but with a capacity of only 17,000. Later, the stadium was built up and renovated step by step because Valencia CF became more successful as a club and was in need of a bigger stadium. In 1969, the name of the stadium changed to Estadio Luís
Casanova, named after the club’s most symbolic president, Luis Casanova Giner. However
in 1994, the name changed back to Estadio Mestalla, on request from Luis
Casanova himself.
In 2006 plans for Nou Mestalla were unveiled which would have been able to host up to 75,000 fans. The opening was foreseen for the beginning of the 2010-2011 seasons, but in 2009 financial crisis struck and construction stopped due to financial problems. In 2012, an agreement was made and the building restarted. In 2013 Valencia announced an updated redesign, which would reduce the capacity to 61,500. Now the new stadium is still under construction.
