— Why we exist

Mission & vision.

One purpose, shared by 350+ operators: raise the standard of how stadiums are run across Europe.

We believe the best ideas in the stadium industry already exist — they're just locked inside individual venues. ESSMA's job is to set them free.

For over fifteen years we've connected the people who actually run Europe's stadiums — operators, leagues and federations — so that what one venue learns the hard way, every other venue learns the fast way. No theory and no sales pitch: just operators sharing what works.

From the first brick to the final whistle, we exist to make every matchday safer, smarter and more sustainable than the last.

Our vision

A European stadium industry that learns as one.

A network where every operator — from a 5,000-seat ground to a 90,000-seat arena — has the knowledge, the peers and the tools to run a world-class venue.

  • Member-led, never top-down
  • Practice over theory
  • Open by default

— How we got here

Fifteen years
in the making.

From a handful of stadium managers swapping notes to the operating system of Europe’s venue industry.

2010

The network begins

A handful of stadium managers in Belgium start meeting to swap what works. ESSMA is founded in Sint-Truiden as a not-for-profit, member-led association.

2012

First Summit & the original group

The first ESSMA Summit brings operators together in one room — and Pitch Management, the founding discipline, is formalised as its first expert group.

2015

Expertise expands

Operations, Safety & Security and Development & Construction join as dedicated expert groups, each with its own peer community and events.

2018

200 venues, one report

Membership passes 200 operators across 25 nations, and the first Stadium Development Report sets a shared benchmark for the industry.

2021

Sustainability moves to the core

Sustainability & SMART becomes a core expert area as venues commit to net-zero, and the digital member portal launches.

2023

Mastermind & 300+

The network passes 300 venues and launches Mastermind peer groups — small, confidential circles of operators solving shared problems together.

2026

The operating system of the industry

350+ venues across 35 nations and six expert areas. The Summit heads to Amsterdam ArenA as ESSMA marks fifteen years.
