11th ESSMA Summit Madrid: Sustainability – from theory to practice

Presented by Menno Kooistra (KPMG) and Sander van Stiphout (Johan Cruijff ArenA), this session explored the strategic integration of sustainability in the sports and entertainment sectors. It highlighted key concepts like double materiality and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), demonstrating how sustainability can become a value driver rather than a compliance burden.

The presentation, titled “Sustainability is More than a Goal,” delved into practical strategies for embedding sustainability into business operations, guided by European regulations and industry benchmarks.

Key Discussion Points:

  1. Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD):

    • Overview of CSRD requirements, emphasizing the need for transparency in reporting impacts on people and the planet.
    • Double Materiality: A dual lens approach evaluating both financial materiality (investor perspective) and impact materiality (broader societal and environmental effects).
  2. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Frameworks:

    • Breakdown of ESG components: environmental impact, social contributions, and governance practices.
    • Importance of aligning with sustainability standards, including UEFA’s financial sustainability rules and the Green Event Standard.
  3. Strategic Integration:

    • Case study of Johan Cruijff ArenA’s “Net Positive 2030” ambition, targeting circularity, emissions reduction, and stakeholder collaboration.
    • The ArenA’s journey included comprehensive assessments of scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and partnership-driven solutions.
  4. Value Chain and Reporting:

    • Focus on the entire value chain to ensure sustainable procurement, event management, and visitor engagement.
    • Need for robust systems, data governance, and third-party assurance to meet CSRD expectations.

Key Takeaways:

  • Embrace CSRD as an opportunity to clarify sustainability goals and enhance transparency.
  • Use double materiality to prioritize impactful actions.
  • Leverage sustainability as a strategic tool for value creation, fostering innovation, and building trust among stakeholders.

This session underscored that sustainability is not just a regulatory requirement but a comprehensive framework for driving meaningful, long-term change.
